Trichomoniasis also known as “trich” is a sexually transmitted and blood-borne infection (STBBI) that is spread through unprotected sexual contact, including the sharing of sex toys.

Symptoms

There may be no noticeable signs or symptoms with trichomoniasis.

People with vaginas may experience:

• foul smelling white/yellow/green foamy thin vaginal discharge
• vaginal itching
• pain during urination and/or sex

People with penises may experience:

• Pain or burning sensation during urination and/or ejaculation
• itching or irritation inside the penis
• Discharge from the penis
• Redness at the top of the penis
• Most often experience no symptoms

Having trichomoniasis can cause sex to feel unpleasant. Without treatment, the infection can last for months or even years.

Testing and Treatment

• Diagnosing trichomoniasis requires a consultation with your healthcare provider. Your healthcare provider may swab the affected area.
  • Trichomoniasis is treated with antibiotics, and both sexual partners should receive treatment.
  • In pregnant people, untreated trichomoniasis can cause a baby to be born early.
