Over the last 50 years, immunization has saved more lives than any other health intervention. Many of us don’t know what life would be like without them or why it is so important to continue to vaccinate.

What is a vaccine?

A vaccine consists of a tiny amount of dead or weakened germs which helps the immune system learn how to protect itself against disease.

Why do we vaccinate adults?

• Your immunity from previous vaccines may wane (decrease) overtime. Therefore, you may need a booster to allow your immune system to fight infection. E.g., tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis (whooping cough), influenza and COVID-19.
• Vaccines are safe! Vaccines have significantly decreased and, in some cases, eliminated, vaccine-preventable diseases (e.g., smallpox).
• Vaccines save lives.

How can adults get vaccinated in Newfoundland and Labrador?

• Adults can receive their immunizations from community health nurses and from their physician, nurse practitioner or pharmacist.
